UK Land Investments has just pitched up in Bangkok trying to sell plots of British Land. Their blurb claims they are affiliated to a well established property company called UK Land but I have never heard of this company. It is certainly not listed on the London Stock Exchange. I would look very carefully into this investment. What chance is there that the land will get planning permission? Do you get a title deed? If not, what is the ownership structure and what happens to the assets if the company goes bankrupt. If you are really keen to invest in British property but don't want to buy a complete property yourself, why not consider the many British property funds, managed by reputable financial institutions, or the shares of the top property firms listed on the LSE, i.e. British Land, Land Securities, Slough Estates? That way you get the benefit of their leverage and tax waivers, as well as dividend income. These salesmen flying out to KL and Bangkok probably have a good laugh about the naivety of people considering buying their products without knowing anyting about the UK property market over drinks at the end of the day.
