Punta Cana is an area that has great beaches but there was nothing there before the government started promoting it as an all inclusive hotel enclave. Driving there is like driving through the cornfields of Kansas. (BORING)
There is basically no Dominican Culture there as everything is brand new.
I am NOT a Punta Cana type person but that being said the area is developing rapidly and I expect prices to rise. I have read that there may be some sort of problems in the specific development you mentioned and you should always be MORE than careful in a country not your own.
My life is centered around the North Coast of the Country so it is almost like asking a New Yorker for advice in California. Same country but a completely different area.
The topography here is very interesting. Mountains run down to the beach. There are some very exclusive gated communities here that are the top communities in the caribbean such as Sea Horse Ranch and Haciendas El Choco.
Here on the North Coast we have NEVER had a hurricane touch down here and this country IS in the Hurricane Belt.
The east and south sides have been hit many times. I don't like hurricanes and that is one of the reasons I picked this area to settle down in.
One thing about the Dominican Republic is that it has 7 international airports which is a lot for a Island Country. We also have different eco systems that run from Desert to Mountains with Snow with a mean temp of 82 degrees Farenheit.
Hope this helps a bit.
