The already built Corais has the new jacques Costeau building and a couple of other smaller buildings a bit of a way away. Still doesn't really effect the view much though.

But since I first went to Natal 5 years ago I have definately noticed a change in the level of poverty for the better. My argument is about Brazil's economy as a whole. There will always be winners and losers. There are people still sleeping on the streets here too. If Brazil does well on a global scale then less people think of it as third world, the better the economy does the more people are employed, the more people that will visit and hence create more jobs.

You would think so Jamie but normal economics doesn't always apply to Brasil. Believe me, I'm not all "doom and gloom" as GW and Dottie seem to be, but Brazil has several factors that make it quite different than most other places. A couple of these are the gross "unequal distribution of income factor", which Brazil is in the top 3 world-wide in this undesirable category, as well as in the top 5 of lowest minimum wage's worldwide. Brazil's economy has improved, but when one looks at world wide numbers and regional numbers he will see that Brazil over the last 5 years has actually grown at a slower rate than ANY latin american or carribean country with the exception of HAITI! And if you're even semi-familiar with Haiti then you'd have to agree that, that isn't too good. Over the last several years Brazil's economy didn't even keep pace with the world-wide average which was more than 4%. So, did Brazil grow? Of course it did, the entire world grew, yet Brazil didn't even make par.

We have roughly 190 million pop. here in Brazil and slightly less than 40 million make less than 2 dollars U.S. per day. This number has gotten slightly better of late, as well as many economic factors in Brazil, not so much because the Brazilian economy is doing better, but because the U.S. dollar is cheaper. Hence when one makes economic comparisons using the U.S. dollar as their base their economic factors appear to be much better than the actually are simply because of the devaluation of the dollar.

I've seen articles over the last year or so that make PPP comparisons in respect to world economies and have ranked brazil tied for 5th world wide, with the likes of the U.K. no less. I only can say this, one needs to factor in "quality of life" in these issues in my opinion because when I visit jolly ole England I certainly don't see the poverty, crime, lack of law enforcement and security that I see on a daily basis here in Brazil.

i agree that the economy has its problems but so do they all. brazil is coming along nicely for a third world country and is better than it used to be. How do you think other economies have encouraged spending? by providing easy access to credit! With the natural resources of Brazil in oil, forest etc I can see the world having a big reliance on it in the future which will only help it! They do have some stupid rules, but things will change.
