Flight info : It appears that flights to and from Portugual will be reduced because of the dengue outbreak of which 19,157 people contracted the illness in R.G.Norte .Further info can be found on Presstur.

Why don't you put up a link as all I can find anywhere is news about Dengue fever in the south, nothing about it in the North.

Probably because once again Dotty seems to have got it wrong. There are two recent articles related to TAP on Presstur.

The first, dated 25-03-2008 (17h51) says that they will increase the sterilization (to kill the mosquitos I suppose) on board TAP flights to Rio de Janeiro because of the outbreak of Dengue there.

http://www.presstur.com/site/news.asp?news=14483

The second, dated 26-05-2008 is related to TAP's overall decrease in flights to several destinations, amongst them Brazil due to the increase in fuel costs.

Rough translation:
"The reduction of the operation is an option which generally the airlines, both low cost and traditional are doing faced with the hike in fuel prices, not only because of the repricing but also because it is in conjunction with a smaller demand. (low season)"

Hi there,

To make it easier(this is how I found it) go into Tribuna Do Norte and then click on the articles on tourism(May 2008) and then you can read up on it.I was astounded by the figure and thought it rather high ,but it is there for you to read .The article is about flights being cancelled between Portugal and Natal until the end of June because of the denge situation. How many do you know with it or had it?I know several including myself and it is awful.

Still can't find it. How about making it really easy and posting the link to the story on this site?

Well Dotty does not seem to have got it wrong! It may be easier for you to go into Tribuna and then go to the tourist arcive and click on May and you will be able to read up on the flight cancellation situation due to the denge outbreak between Portugal and Natal. Hope this helps you.

She quoted Presstur now she is quoting Tribuna do Norte when in fact, that was not news in the Tribuna do Norte newspaper, it was posted in one of the Blogs on the Tribuna do Norte website and the blogger ends with "all this will be confirmed in the Economy section of the Tribuna do Norte Newspaper tomorrow". ("tomorrow" would have been 14.05.2008)

Which never happened...

The "Blogger" states that he/she has information (which they got from Presstur) that TAP will cancel one flight from Lisbon to Natal and only during the month of June. Even according to the blogger, at the end of June it starts up again so Dotty's post of "It appears that flights to and from Portugual will be reduced" is somewhat misleading as they will be (at best) temporarily reduced. And the reduction is so insignificant to Yearly figures (maximum would be 1.300 passengers of a yearly 300.000) that it is worth mentioning.

Additionally there is nothing on Presstur or the TAP website or any other newspaper that I can find or have read about TAP cancelling any flights because of Dengue so I can only assume that either something changed or the blogger got it wrong.

Rio is at an all time low with no tourists. I was in Rio last week for a while and Dengue Mosquitos are biting a lot of people in the suburbs around Rio de Janeiro. Even my Gym in Ipanema, a Doctor friend got bit on a side street near Leblon. The News shows a horrible scene of poor people standing in long lines for miles waiting for treatment. They have make shift beds and ivs in arms, people just sittingthe North Zone of Rio. That was on the News. From what I understand if you get bit, seek treatment asap or you could die. Because there is no cure.

Routes within Brazil and out are based I think on corruption, who gets paid what. Remember Varig broke from corruption within.

However, while the topic used wasn't the best, it's about time someone mentioned Dengue - Surprised GW and Dotty hadn't brought it up earlier.

Now if Dotty had stated "State of Emergency declared in Rio Grande do Norte due to outbreak of Dengue fever" that would not only have been factually correct, but it would have had a lot more impact as the words "state of emergency" are normally quite good at getting a rise out of people. The numbers Dotty stated are around the figures that I'd heard of with regular Dengue.

The fact that no one (not even those living in Brasil) mentioned it makes me think that it's not quite as bad as I was assuming it was. As I'm going out there next month and know from experience that I'm considered "Gourmet Dish" in the mosquito world, I've got to admit I'm a little concerned.

I wonder how much mosquito repellent I'm allowed to carry on board?
