Seek treatment asap but it's not as dangerous as all that (although if I do get bit, I'll be going to the hospital)

There are several different types of Dengue. The vast majority of Dengue are not comfortable but they are also not fatal. Of the 24000 reported cases of Dengue 800 were reported to be the nasty kind of which only 90 were confirmed and whereas 47 deaths were suspected to be related to Haemmorhagic Dengue, only three were confirmed.

Mr Broad,

Denge is horrendous.I got bitten in 2004 and will never forget it.It is the worse sensation you can not imagine, only those that have had it really understand and it lasted for 16 days.
Infact have you seen what the female denge eater looks like ? She is black with white stripes on her and rises in the afternoon and looks beautiful, but boy does she make you ill!

If you are looking for a Tropical beach, just forget about mosquitos & dengue, specially during the raining season. They are everywhere, except West coast of Australia (not sure if Perth region is tropical) and Peru. Mediterranean is obviously not Tropical. Check the link below, dengue map from wikipedia:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...9/Dengue06.png

JM, regarding the "Gourmet Dish" thing: mosquitos are really nasty folks, they harass the newcomers. Fist time I visited my wife's city, countryside of RS, "borrachudos" (not dengue type, but the bulliest one), abuse me all week long, but just me, nobody else!? Their sting were painful. Second time there, I basically didn't notice them, third time? None! Today they don't even care to drop me an email..., You British can literally say: bloody mosquitos!!

Except for the colors, she seems familiar...

That she does.

And having lived on a subtropical island for years you'd expect me to be mosquito repellent by now but I still get bitten when I go back. Last time I was in Brazil I can't remember if I got bitten but I'm sure I probably did.

To put it into perspective -

According to Wikipedia (which could be wrong) Malaria has a mortality rate of around 1%, Dengue has a mortality rate of around 0.1%

But no, I don't want to get bitten

Don't put too much faith in respect to stats about this kind of thing. Until recently no one knew that Sergipe had the 2nd largest outbreak of dengue in Brazil only behind Rio. They weren't reporting the numbers. And the number of hemormorhagic dengue cases has been alarming. There are no more beds in the hospitals, and haven't been for quite a while, in Aracaju because of dengue.

Either way I'm not delighted - even if I get the mildest case and just end up with severe headaches and flu like symptoms that's more than I want while I'm out working in a foreign country.

Having said that, three of my colleagues have been in Natal for a couple of weeks and they are all fine and they are on their way to Recife for the property trade fair at the end of this week and seem to be perfectly ok without any symptoms.

I guess if it was something to be really worried about I'm assuming that one of them or any of my other friends living in Natal would have said something about my trip.
