It is actually javascript code buffoon. Google analytics does nothing but track users, so why is it in there if you aren't tracking users.

How come when I accused you many times in the past about being an agent you admitted that you were a developer but never an agent. Now suddenly you come out as an agent.

That is free software used for tracking reports, i use it myself at work. It is built into your html pages, I am not syaing you are a liar etc i think your web developer has prob set this up and maybe you are not aware of it.

Hooray- I run my business, have a website being rebuilt, and yes, Google Analytics, I understand from the web design company, are used to optimise your positioning in search engines. Other than that I have no clue about tracking etc. I am sure that would go for 99% or more of people, so obviously you have experience in that field, and I take my hat off to you. So what you are actually doing is calling people on this board liars and cheats and your mission is to expose the lies! What a crock of sh*t. Sad is nothing I think it is pathetic. You hide behind a name that tells it all. Many posters here do not hide behind anonymity like you, so who is more likely to tell the lies?

If he is managing your hosting he can track it easily for you and give you some monthly stats as an email through Urchin.

LOL no problem whatsoever. Such people do spring up once in a while and in this business, you meet all kinds. I would not characterize your assessment of that person's intellect and mental state to be inaccurate however, because I totally agree with you. ;-D (Not to worry too, there are a lot of such people online, paranoid and likely conspiracy theorists who are sure George W. Bush is on their phone line listening.)


Trying not to ramble too much, allow me to provide as much context and detail:


1. That code snippet is Google Analytics (formerly Urchin before purchased them), which is web analytics software made to accurately obtain statistics about the site. (It can be placed or removed easily without issue whatsoever; and was placed there as standard operating procedure as many of our clients request to have it included if they have an account or plan to have one in the future).


2. In a way, he isn't totally (technically) wrong, because analytics software's purpose is to gauge the performance, traffic and other metrics of a site. But where he gets it wrong is in making the mistaken assumption that this is malicious. His error is of correlation. It's as if he's telling someone not to invest in the stock market just because people lose money on it, which is true but not considering that it's based on mistaken logic, because many people obviously make money from it too and the correlation has no bearing.


3. Statistics/Analytics code in sites in no way mean to be intrusive or have any er, evil intention. Much in the way sites keep cookies (in that way even Amazon.com is more intrusive because if you logged in or purchased from them, when you return days, weeks or even months after, they still know who you are and happily greet you accordingly-- that's because they store a cookie in your computer/browser. But that obviously is for the good so you don't have to log-in every single time, and in no way means there's malicious code).


4. In this case, the code is to get traffic statistics in the same way your server already likely does via your CPanel using web server software like AWSTATS or Webalizer. The difference with Google Analytics (nee Urchin) is that it's more conservative with traffic stats and quoted by some to be far more accurate and better in giving you information about the site's traffic.


5. All they really need to do is look at the code itself, and see that it's from Google, and thus see its legitimacy. Now if they then argue that google itself cannot be trusted, well that's another story. ;-)
