in my opinion - dominican republic is the best.
1. great beaches
2. lowest prices for real estate in caribbean
3. varied terrain, mountains, streams, as well as beaches
4. large island - lots to do

has anyone looked into the western caribbean? in particular Belize? English speaking, US$ is 2=1. clear property titles, VERY low property taxes, no capital gains etc...many of the good benefits other Caribbean countries have to offer, but at lower rates. .3/4 acre beach lots 120' caribbean frontage in resort community for 399k.

just curious, as i see most other caribbean countries on this thread. belize only 2 -3 hour flight from dallas/houston/miami...4 hours from charlotte NC. stable gov't.

Has anyone looked at Shepherd Island it is a secluded island close to the mainland of Panama in the Archipelagos of Bocas Del Toro in the Caribbean Sea?

I have recenly invested in Land on Cayman Brac, a sister Island to Grand Cayman.
I was attracted to the recent statistic the agent showed me including capital growth of 112% over the past 6 years with 50% over the past 6 months. I found this hard to beat compared to any other investment destination. Tourism is also up 69% which obvioulsy contributes to these figures with over 50 international flight heading into Grand Cayman each week.

I am a firm believer of the old saying " its the early bird who gets the worm" and if Cayman Brac turns out anything like Grand Cayman then I am onto a winner.

I have only just read your post after already posting, what you say about needing such a huge income to live on the Cayman islands is no longer the case, I have just purchased land on Cayman Brac for under £30,000 ($60,000 USD) nowhere else in the civilised world could i do that, and for the price of a taxi, i can hop across to Grand Cayman.

And with capital growth between the 3 islands increasing 112% over the past 6 years, this seems like a wise investment to me.

I'm just reading this post myself and I have to disagree on the idea of St Lucia being a dangerous crime area. Caribbean Cops, just like any other TV show is sensationalized in order to attract viewers and sell ads. Yes, St Lucia has crime and is part of the drug trade route, just like every other island in the Caribbean, or really any area of the world. There's no avoiding it.

The positives, however, far outweigh any threat of danger as I have been living here for two years now and have never once felt unsafe or uncomfortable. Rather, the island has been experiencing a tremendous boom in development fueled by the strong pound and euro ratio to the US Dollar. St. Lucia uses EC Dollars, which are permanently fixed to the US at 2.67 to 1. In addition to the great pound/dollar exchange, the island is still very new in the development game and as such, has much lower prices compared to neighboring Barbados. Basically, the island is seeing investors realize the tremendous upside of a newly developed island and getting an investment at half the cost of Barbados, and at half price due to the exchange rate. For certain investors, they're finding a deal that costs 25% of what it will be worth when markets shift, as they always do.

None of this takes into account the absolute beauty of the island, which is really unmatched throughout the Caribbean.

Why not try Honduras and the Bay Islands. We have been visiting and investing in Roatan for years. Its a fantastic destination for Scuba divers and the slightly more adventurous traveler and you can still get land for very cheap compared to most other Caribbean destinations. And, the locals/government are friendly to investors.
