Hello Everybody

AS we speak your normal satellite dish here in Hurghada is able to recieve pictures from NILE SAT and HOT-BIRD satellite's.

For those of you out there that watch the UK soaps you will struggle I'm afraid BBC PRIME was and has been available between the times its unscrambled and at the moment its is SCRAMBLED so no chance of watching Eastenders or Dads army.

As for the ITV soaps they are available on subscription via Showtime but the Price of this is working out ant around £35 per month similar to sky back in the UK.

The slingbox idea is ok on the surface but you need a good friend to connect it to his sky and also to give up his internet connection to make it available for you to receive the pictures from the silngbox via the internet, and you internet connection has to be fast in order to stream the pictures to your PC. This again could prove difficult here as already explained internet charges are rather expensive here for a suitable connection.

The last and probably only solution to the Sky TV problem is to have the large satellite dish installed details are it needs a 2.4 mtr dish in order to pick up the satellite. The cost of this including its installation is around £150 including a motor to re position the satellite to receive NILE SAT and HOT-BIRD.

The only problem i can see here is having a personal satellite dish installed on an apartment complex who provides satellite TV already to its residents.

Again just to point out this is information i have sourced out while i have been here its not hearsay form other people.

The only way i have found of watching the ITV and BBC programs such as the soaps is via the internet using their web sites but when you try to view it knows you are outside the UK and denies you access to view but all i will say is there are ways round this ( PM ME for information) and i can view BBC and ITV. Things like Eastenders Coronation st Emerdale Etc can be viewed the day after its aired in the UK.

I hope this has answered most of your questions

However if you want to pi

I know that most of the new developments are described as having 'cabling for digital TV' installed, which means that each owner need not have their own dish. I imagine that the developments will have some big dishes sat on the roof.

While I can imagine that they will have all of the free-to-air channels available, I can't see how they are going to be able to work with paid channels. So I imagine that the average apartment owner will have the same choice of channels as can be found currently in the better hotels.

I can't see that the developers are going to be impressed if everyone sticks a 2m dish on their balconies either!

With my apartment there is a satalite reciever on the roof, with turnkey package we recieved a satalite reciever box the satalite system is turned to NILE sat. the most popular English cannels are Dubai one,MBC2,MBC4 and MBC action. there are other channels such as Kuwait2, Saudi2 which also have English. The satalite reception is free of charge.

Additional satellite channels are possible by subscribing to a package using a card that you put in the reciever box.

Also we are not permitted to put an extra satellite dish on the roof or in any of the balconies that face the street.

Default TV

I've just spoken to a friend of mine who lives in Cairo. They've just had Dreambox installed. Apparently it works through the internet so you need ADSL. They install a wireless router and a set top box. It costs 1000LE to get the box installed and a further 110LE a month. She said that any satellite provider will know about it. I Googled 'dreambox adsl showtime' and got loads of info - not sure if it's legal or not! Anyway it gives you the three 'satellites' that I mentioned before i.e. Showtime, Orbit and Firstnet. (All the Discovery channels, National Geographic, movie channels, BBC Prime etc etc).

On a different note, if you shop on the internet but find that many places won't deliver outside of the U.K. (or U.S.), there's a company called Aramex (aramexDOTcom) that, for a very small fee, sets up a P.O.Box address for you in both countries. You can then use that address to have your 'shopping' mailed to. They then deliver it to your door. As I've said before, my dad records loads of UK TV for me and I don't always trust the post here in Bahrain - bit of a hit and miss as to whether it'll arrive or not. Last week he sent a package of 20 DVD's to my Aramex address in Slough, it arrived at my door today and cost a little under £8. It's brilliant and totally legal!

As I posted on the ExpatForum thread, it looks like you will need a 4m dish to pick up Sky that far out of Astra's footprint.

That's pretty big!
