You would need to check the situation on import duties - I have heard they are high.

Does anyone know for sure what size dish we need for Sky or Astra? The suggestions have gone from 2m to 2.4m and now to 4m! We'll need our own satelite at this rate!!

Play around with the interactive map here:

SES-ASTRA - Interactive Fleet Map

You will see that Egypt is WAY out of Astra's footprints.

Default Tv Over The Internet

You can watch Tv on the internet on some websites, there is a dutch guy who broadcasts globally Tv channels via the net, free of charge. I watched it a few times, some quality is good other is not! Got sports channels all sorts. You will have to look via google, I dont have the url with me.

Basically the way it works is that you connect it to a satellite receiver at home plus to your Internet connection, and you can then view all of the TV channels through a broadband connection anywhere in the world.

I tried it through my Dad's connection. He only had a 500kb connection at that time and so it didn't work that great.

Then I must admit that I got too busy to try it again as I haven't had much time for TV over the last few months.

I have been with a satelitte engineer myself and he knew about sky tv and insistedd i would need a 2.4 mtr dish as far as 4 mtr is concerned ive never seen one here. The last place i saw a dish that size would be on top of a restaurant/night club in Hisaronu Turkey and that thing was HUGE i mean helicopter landing pad size.

You can subscribe to showtime arabia and receive english channels such as bbc prime(eastenders upto date) and all the premiership football.

I think it varies according to which of the particular Astra satellites channels are broadcast from.

BBC, BBC2, ITV, C4 are all broadcast on a satellite with a very small footprint. When I was in Prague I could pick up most Sky channels with a regular dish, but not the big four.

I saw a map somewhere showing that you would need a 3.5m dish to pick up these channels from Alexandria, but maybe for the other Sky channels you would 'only' need a 2.4m dish.

thanks for that i am still interested in having a go as have the equipment and the plus point is no uk tv licence fees also found this info today

You will need to sort the card and box out before anything else, you will also have to have the box hand carried into Egypt unless you are happy to pay customs many moneys and go through all the bureaucracy to get it sent to you.

After that you will need the biggest dish you can get, the max allowed in Egypt is 2.4 meters.but if you find bigger can you let me know as I want one too.

Sky is transmitted on more then one satellite, and more then one beam, not a lot of the Egyptian dish guys know this and think if they find one beam then they got it all. You won't get everything unless you find a huge dish, I think it would have to be quite a bit bigger then 3 meters too but what you do get on a 2.4 meter dish is quite easy to find.

You won't get the BBC's apart from and radio, you won't get the ITV"s or Channel 4 or Sky 2 and 3. You will get Sky 1, channel 5, Sky sports 1 and 2 and 3 , some movie channels. you will get almost everything else but some times it will be the +1.

Good luck.
