We shopped around a bit and found that the best place for your electrical goods appears to be V-Tech, which is in the shopping/eating centre on the left going up the hill, opposite the Italian Restaurant on the way to Sakalla. We got a 21" TV, a DVD player, a vacuum cleaner, a toaster and a White Whale cooker for about 2500LE, delivered in their own van. The TV is a flat-screen (CRT) model and I bought a 21" as the apartments are small and I didn't want to feel overwhelmed but, in retrospect, could have gone at least one size more.
We bought a Satellite decoder for about £50 (probably paid too much) and get, as stated earlier, Nilesat, with its 300 odd programs, about 4 or 5 English language. However, if you trawl around through the channels, it passes the time and can improve your language skills no end. Massalamah.
p.s. Take all your old (especially free from papers) DVD's.
Hi there,

how did the price of the lcd tvs compare to the uk? we have just returned from a week in hurghada but didnt get chance to look at the prices of the electrical items - looked at furniture etc which we found to be very reasonable but ran out of time on the electrical side of things! We have also just put a deposit down on a 2 bed in the british resort - block 4, 3rd floor - so we could be neighbours! I was really impressed with the british resort and cant wait to go back out in april to furnish the place!

Hi Linda
I have tried a couple of times this week; didn't do anything different and hey presto works fine on a whole range of channels. Maybe it depends on the bandwidth available on the day? Would it work on a bigger screen if we connected the laptop to the TV?

Great! No reason why it shouldn't work if you connect it to the TV - let me know because we keep saying we'll do the same!

When we were over in Feb we had a good look around for lcd tvs but couldnt find any the size we wanted 26-32" (so it wouldnt look too big for the room!) for under £650 gbp. We bought the 26" one here for £300 gbp + £50 for the excess baggage cost so £350 GBP in total - a saving of £300 - which paid for the other 2 smaller tvs for the bedrooms and the excess baggage!
I think as long as you package anything fragile up well it will arrive without a problem.... I suppose its all down to personal preference and whether you can be bothered with the hassle at this end or the hassle when you get there!

The other thing I found quite expensive when we were there was kettles and toasters.... a nice silver kettle was around £25 so I suppose its not too much different from here but the silver toasters (which i only saw a couple) were all over £30.00 - seems a lot when you can get them here for £7 in Tesco!

Default Showtime Satellite TV

Just some info for you on the Showtime package available which gives you loads of English speaking tv chanels along with all the sports chanels which show the English premier league games etc....

Shaun went down to the Showtime shop in Sekalla and bought the satellite receiver box which you need to connect to the normal free tv chanels BUT got the box with a card slot (some of them come without the card slot so you need to make sure you get one with if you plan on getting Showtime) I think the box was around £40GBP. Then in the Showtime shop you can buy the subscription to showtime - you have to pay up front and they give you the card there and then - takes around 24 hrs to be activated. The cost was £170GBP for 6 months subscription.

It all defo works in the British Resort as ours is up and running so i presume it will be the same procedure for anyone in other developments who has access to a satellite tv connection.....

Hi Queenie!
There wasnt that many really (not that were English speaking anyway!).....
I think there was a couple of music ones, dubai sport/racing, i think it was fox which was an american one with stuff like bones, scrubs, 24...etc on a bit like our sky one and there was a couple of movie chanels... thats all i can remember really!
Shaun wanted Showtime for the premiership games and also for the kids chanels - you get disney and a few others.... plus more movie chanels.. Just an added bonus for our friends and family too I guess!

Hiya Sue,

Sorry I haven't been back to you - these last few days I've been packing up and travelling back to Wales for the summer. I'm absolutely exhausted now I'm here!!

We have the Showtime package in Bahrain and actually it's not too bad - better than Orbit and they do have excellent coverage of all premiership matches. There's not a lot of UK programming - used to be much more - Coronations St (about 6 weeks behind UK) Emmerdale about 2 months behind. They're really good with new US series and we also get Sky News.

Hi Alison - MBC have 3 free to air channels and they're not too bad. One is a movie channel, the other is mostly American series and things like Oprah they also have MBC Action which airs US series like CSI. There's a few other Englsih language channels but nothing great. For holidays only I can't see the point of paying for satellite. Cheaper to take your DVD player and stuff that you've recorded before hand (films for instance).

Where did you get your DVD player from for £8? And do you know if we can play DVD's brought in egypt on english dvd players? Also do you know anything about playstations and there games being played on it. I suppose it's best to buy all that stuff at home and just take it out there.

Dawn -x-
I have a reciever in my apartment and there are plenty of free channels you can watch without subscribing to showtime. MBC1,2,3,4. Fox TV, Selevision(which has a lot of Australian stuff but not home and away). I have been watching most of the European Championship on ZDF2(German channel) also many local satellite channels have US/English movies and series with arabic subtitles. There are also a couple of childrens channels in English.

Danny
