Default Television in Egypt?

Being a bit of a 'soap' addict I wonder if anyone knows if you can get UK channels in Egypt through SKY as we can in Spain?

As we are planning to move there this could be the deciding factor which convinces my wife that it is the right decision!

Anyone know what options are possible? What size dish to you need and how much does it cost? Is there a special set top box or what?

My wife is no quite so bothered but we do take DVDs of old soaps since Hotels do not do English soaps.

You can get a few english channels in Egypt a great movie channel, news, music, series, kids programmes not found the soaps though. might be able to get if you suscribe for more channels. all around the channel 20-30 on the sky box. Things are different in the hotels they must change there tv sets to pickup round the 30-40 channels they do not have a sky box in rooms.

Hi Peter,

We live in Bahrain and we subscribe to 3 satellite providers all of which I know are available in Egypt. The first is 'Orbit' (orbitDOTnet) which has amongst others, BBC Prime. Nothing particularly prime about it but we get Eastenders which is about 10 days behind UK episodes. The 2nd is Showtime (showtimearabiaDOTcom). This gives us Coronation St and Emmerdale but a couple of months behind - the characters are just starting to talk about christmas for instance. The 3rd is First Net which we only subscribe to for Sky News. For UK sports fans Showtime is excellent showing all premiership matches for instance as well as rugby, cricket etc. I'm pretty sure that Sky isn't available. As far as subscription costs, they're more expensive than at home but not terrible. No point telling you how much as they vary by package, company and country. I rope my poor old dad into recording anything that I fancy watching in the UK onto DVD as I'm a bit of a TV addict - not much else to do here! Reassure her that you do get used to being without SKY!!!

Linda

Default TV

Forgot to add that you need a box for each provider but only one satellite I think. It's all pretty straightforward though. Next time the phone numbers come up for Egypt I'll email them. There's also something similar to Sky plus now. Showtime has it's version - Showbox. It's on the website.

Does anyone use Slingbox?

Basically the way it works is that you connect it to a satellite receiver at home plus to your Internet connection, and you can then view all of the TV channels through a broadband connection anywhere in the world.

I tried it through my Dad's connection. He only had a 500kb connection at that time and so it didn't work that great.

Then I must admit that I got too busy to try it again as I haven't had much time for TV over the last few months.

Hi Nick I have heard of the slingbox, it sounds like a good idea but I am no good with these techy things.

I also heard your home TV has to be on, not sure if this is correct.
