I would ask the advice of my friend who lives in Hurghada but like me she saves up al her aches and pains and fillings for the summer holidays back in the UK. ...and my husband's neice is a dentist but she's based in Cairo. I'm no help at all I'm afraid.

Default El Gouna Hospital

Living in El Gouna for five years I have used everything! As I am a property owner I pay Egyptian rates but with my annual tourist visa I would pay tourist rates if I go to a hospital outside. It costs LE45 to see a dentist, optician or doctor or 45 Euros if you are a tourist.

The first time I visited the dentist he did a check and clean and I had to return for further cleaning because my gums were bleeding too much. All this for LE45! Fillings I think were LE170. I have had two crowns replaced on my two front upper teeth. They cost LE800 each. They have to send them off to Cairo to be made and OK it took three attempts to get them to fit and returning them to Cairo for adjustments but they are fine. The temporary crowns were better than my old ones!

The optician also did an eye test for LE45 and gave me a new perscription. I think the new lenses were LE270 in non-scratcheable plastic? When I first had them done I know they were LE280 for the frames and glass.

I often go for check ups at the hospital because everything is there and so easy. The laboratory for blood tests, etc., gyneacologist, ultra sounds, x-ray, etc. You pay extra for each item but it is not expensive (as a resident).

We did have someone come to the hopsital to try and sell an insurance package. Unfortunately the sales presentation didn't leave me with any confidence. A lot of people come here to retire but they didn't cover anyone over 60 and had to come back with a special price The maximum limit on the insurance cover was LE150,000 per year and the General Manager of the hospital assured us that this would cover everything including brain surgery as prices in Egypt are so cheap. However, this amount did not cover a tourist falling off a ladder recently! I know the hospitals claim a huge amount from the insurance companies and the insurance companies reject the claims until they reduce the amount. This insurance package also covered many other hospitals all over Egypt and in my experience there is a price for a foreigner and price for an Egyptian and at Borg Laboratories in Cairo I can only pay foreigner prices so I bet they would not accept this card and miss out on the high prices.

We also get specialists coming every month or so from Cairo to the El Gouna hospital. I saw the skin specialist which cost LE110.

I was also interested in doing the RAST Food Allergy test. In the UK I believe they can test about 200 food items with a blood sample. I tried to find out how to have this done in Egypt and they do this test at Borg Laboratories in Cairo for I think it was LE370. The results then appear online after a few days. Well they only tested nine foods. One of which was cod. Anyone seen a cod in the Red Sea? One of which was celery! The usual cow's milk, hens eggs but rye flour not wheat?!, pistacheos, hazlenuts and prawns. The results are either positive or negative no scale. Waste of time and money really.

And a lot of ladies here are taking advantage of the cheap prices for cosmetic surgery having face lifts, brow lifts, tummy tucks, botox, breast implants, etc. No horror stories yet

Hi Georgina

Thanks for all the info. Is it only property owners in El Gouna that get the cheaper rates?

Lyndsay

No, I think Europeans who are working in Hurghada with a residents visa also get these rates. I know some of the yachties who are wintering here in the marina get them too.
