Hi ! I have a villa along with my mate also and over the last 2 years have been to Hurghada many times and regarding taxis with the meter system , if they try to rip you off as most do then just get out of the car and take a photo of there number plate or badge number with your mobile phone or camera and threaten to show it to the tourist police, you will then see a amazing change of personalty in the driver , And from then on 9 times out of 10 he will even want to give you a free ride . Amazing what a little CON/TRICK does , so just play them at there own game it always works . good luck kjb!

Hi ! Me and my mate have two villas in the Mubarak 6 area of Hurghada and have been there a number of times over the last two years and pay very little for taxi fares but you have tell them exactly what you are going to pay for the journey when you get in the taxi, if they still try to rip you off when you get out just take a photo of there number plate or badge number with your mobile phone or camera and threaten them to show the tourist police the photo and complain you will be amazed at the change in there personalty and 9 times out of 10 they then will offer you a free ride . So it's just a case of playing them at there own game and a little CON/TRICK works wonders also applys to shopkeepers etc etc as they dont want you to cause them any hassle which the tourist doesn't want either . Just a fair cost for a taxi ride would suit us all , but its part and parcel of Egyptian culture ,but this option realy will work for you all on your next visit.kjb!

It used to be like this is Dubai a while back, the taxis used to charge what they liked really and would get away with it because there was not much in the way of public transport & with all the development going on you couldnt walk to the main attractions.

As the people in charge realised what was happning they have now put in place strict guidelines where taxis are required to have a meter fitted and many are even tracked by GPS by the taxi base.

Hi

Just returned from Hurghada , 1st time for me. But the on the taxi subject. Another trick they are trying is as follows. I approached taxi diver and asked how much from Tourist Centre to Hard Rock cafe ? Advised 15 LE. So we get in and we are driving along when driver says 15LE per person..!!! So i tell hm to pull over and we will get out, but realising i was not being rpped, he agreed to continue the jorney for the agreed 15LE.!!
Just thought id let you in on that one..

Another tip - if arranging a return journey with them - agree the price but also ensure that they are not going to add any extra ' waiting time '. They will try and say that you need to pay extra for their time as they have ' waited ' for you once they have dropped you off!!

When we was there in november there was 7 of us, i would go to taxi and agree price (which i paid no more than 10le from intercontinetal to sea gul), then everyone else would get in taxi with kids on knee's they sometimes said what this will be more but i said no go on metre then. And we always got all 7 of us in.
