Moving to Southern France

Welcome all,
Anyone recently moved to Southern France? I lived there for a year 6 years ago and now would love to return. The cost of living is high yet I would like to know if there are possibilities living in a small villages, 20 minutes by bus, from Nice or San Remo? I paid U.S.$450 in nice (plus utilities) 6 years ago but it was a hovel....would like a one bedroom and think it is possible a bus ride away from the nice city center. Any ideas?
