A History of Nicosia’s DivisionAfter a history of community violence in the year 1960’s, the city capital has been divided between the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities, the latter located south and the former in the north. In 1974, there has been an attempt to unite both islands. However, this has caused further division of the capital. The Turkish Cypriots has claimed the northern portion as their state’s capital and is now called by community as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). On April 3, 2008, to serve as an endeavor to reunite the island of Cyprus, the symbolic wall that has been separating the 2 communities is now opened along Ledra Street. At present, Nicosia is famously known as the world’s only remaining divided capital. Its guard towers and barbed wires on Green Line split the town into two separate entities. The northern portion is considered to be the self-declared capital of Northern Cyprus which the southern portion stands Republic of Cyprus’ capital.
