Default Will USA Ski Resorts replace the Alps for 2nd Homes

With this season distinctly lacking substantial dumps of the white stuff accross most of the Alps while the USA reports record levels in states like Colorado, is it worth looking at second homes in resorts like Winter Park where Intrawest have just started building?

Smile Fraser Crossing - Winter Park

We have just bought a studio in the new development Fraser Crossing situated at the base of the slopes. We bought off plan and saw it finished in the New Year. We took possesion on 18th January and have just received our 1st rental statement - it was rented for 11 of the possible 14 days in January. Not bad! We definitely see it more as a long term investment as Intrawest are ploughing millions of dollars into deveoping the resort over the next 8-10 years. As with all investments - best to get in at the beginning if you can.

I don't know how the alps are doing, but ski resorts in the USA do very well.

Many of the ski resorts are quite high priced.

Snow is better in the western states and the mountains are more challenging. We like to tease the eastern states and tell them they don't have mountians, they have hills. However, they do have ski resorts that are well used.

In my town (Bend Oregon) there are 2 ski mountains and 2 more within day trip distance. We always have snow every year, with a long season, and Mt Bachelor is famous for both it's powder and it's sunshine.

Closer to the UK is Norway and Finland. I was looking at ski cabins in Finnish lapland where you can ski right into June but it is cold in the winter, however this does'nt seem to put people off.
Skiing in the US is more attractive for me, but it's too long a flight.

I was in the doctor's office yesterday and there was a ski magazine that had a list of 10 up and coming ski resorts in the USA and Canada. I tell ya, they all sounded like really great places to invest.

There's one in Canada that has skiing 365 days a year. You can't beat that. The Canadian Olympic team trains there, so it would be easy to figure out which one it is.

Unfortunately, it wasn't my magazine and I was stressed for time to make my next appointment, so I didn't have time to copy down the list. I will be there again in 3 weeks and if the magazine is still there, I will write down the names of the resorts.

I wouldn't even have noticed the cover of the magazine if I hadn't just read this question about ski resorts here on this board. I think it is possible that the information might come up on the web with a bit of googling.
