Default Turkey EU application

Thoughts on turkeys Eu application? succesful or not?

I believe they will be turned down on this application due to them not recognising Cyprus as a country - however with the gouverment becoming more and more forward thinking(ie casino commisioned) i believe they will be a member eventually.

Them is Turkey, I take it,

A interesting read,

Turkey - European Union

Turkish industry, formally applied for full membership in 1987. Much to Turkey's disappointment, the decision was deferred until 1993--or later--on grounds that the EC could not consider new members until after the implementation of tighter political integration scheduled for the end of 1992

EU members have also expressed reservations about Turkey's human rights record,
No other EU member as a bad human rights record,?

Aegean coast thats where i live, İts Turkey.therefore they are controlliing there own air space,?

My thoughts on turkeys Eu application,? it will be dragged on for many a more year to come,

I doubt Turkey will get in for many, many years if at all. They've already had plenty of obstacles chucked in their way and many European governments are reticent about letting in 80 million muslims. All of this, in turn, is causing the Turks to lose enthusiasm for the EU. A shame - it would be better to have them in than out.

Having studied this carefully, I cannot see any reason for Turkey NOT to be admitted to the EU. Huge strides have been made with regards to the land issue in TRNC, and the European Court of Human Rights recently announced that the Turkish Commission dealing with land compensation was acting within the legal framework set out for such a commission. Their human rights record has improved massively, and continues to do so. The economy is getting stronger, they are a huge part of NATO, they already have a reciprocal agreement with some EU member states with regards to property purchase and a reciprocal health agreement is currently being hammered out with the UK.

Living in Turkey, one gets a completely different perspective. From the Uk/European side it is a question of what Turkey has to do to be allowed in the club and how long it will take before it would be politically acceptable. In Turkey, the rapid Europeanisation of legalisation and all the structures of state have led to a backlash against Europe, strongly encouraged by those political interests who never want to see Turkey join the EU. The biggest companies in Turkey are still privately owned by some incredibly rich and powerful families. If Turkey joins the EU, they would have to start paying decent wages for reasonable hours, and paying for benefits such as holidays and insurance. In short their wealth depends upon Turkey not joining the EU. And these people own TV channels and newspapers....

The equivalent of the tabloids in Turkey cover in great detail every negative comment by any European politician about any aspect of Turkey, spinning and twisting it for maximum affect. The received view of most ordinary folk seems to be along the lines of "We have already given up too much to Europe" and "If Europe doesn't want us why should Turkey change any more".

I made my first property investments in Turkey in 2002 with the expectation that the membership of the EU was inevitable, it was just a question of time. After living in Turkey for three years and dealing with politicians, bureaucrats, tradespeople, ordinary folk as well as rich folk, my view now is that Turkey is not culturally, socially or psychologically ready or willing to join the EU and that it may yet be a generation away from being ready.

Discuss!

Tim.
