Default IT professionals want to settle in UK

Is it REALLY possible for an American with no employment connection, no family connection to simply up and move abroad staying long term or permanently with no time restrictions?

My husband and I would like to do this with the hopes of finding employment in the IT industry with a company or working remotely, preferably within the UK.
I've thought that England/Scotland or (?) would be nice or anywhere we could buy something affordable. We would be happy to rent as well!

Are there any people who are thinking of the same thing or have been able to move from the US. to UK... that didn't have any family/marriage links but who have been able to navigate their way through the "red tape" with clarity???
All responses here and privately would be appreciated.
Thank you
angelina

An American can go to the UK for up to six months with no visa etc. But as a visitor you cannot work while you are there, and when you enter they will want to know how you plan to support yourself. They are very stern and will check your return ticket etc. and if it is for two weeks or something like that then sure--you are a tourist and it will be easy to get in. But if your ticket is one way or for six months later they will ask searching questions and if they do not like your answers yes, they will send you back to the USA and all you will see is one tiny part of the airport.

So plan ahead and get the workpermits before you go.
Thanks
